MUSTANGS PICK UP THREE MORE VICTORIES
Thursday night was another terrific night of wrestling for the Shadow Ridge Mustangs, as they won all three of their duals against some of the better teams in the Las Vegas area. The night started off with a victory over the Foothill Falcons by a score of 42 to 24. Getting pins for the Mustangs in the dual were Lucas Washington, Austin Jones, John Scarpati, Kevin Henry, and Tyler Carter. The Mustangs then went on to beat the Liberty Patriots by a score of 51-15. Getting pins for the Stangs were Jacob Rivas, Daniel Anderson, and Tyler Carter. The final match of the evening was the most exciting match as the Mustangs took on the Centennial Bulldogs for the annual "Battle for the Boots". The Mustangs wrestle for a perpetual trophy, which are wrestling shoes donated by Lincoln Mcllravy who was a 5x high school state champ, 3x NCAA champion, and Olympic Bronze Medalist. The Mustangs dominated the dual by a score of 42-12, keeping the boots. The match of the evening went to John Scarpati, who wrestled up a weight class to take on Hunter Brown, the defending state champ at the 195lb weight class. After a bad call by the ref, and not getting the take down on the edge of the mat, and with only 4.1 seconds remaining in the match. John Scarpati, who was down by 1 point, took down the defending state champ to stay undefeated on the season. Austin Jones also won a big match, moving up a weight class. Tyler Carter scored the only pin for the Mustangs, but the team won 11 of the 14 matches. Two of those losses were forfeits. The kids wrestled tough, and keep the boots for another year which are proudly displayed in the wrestling room.
SHADOW RIDGE PLACES THIRD AT THE GREEN VALLEY DUALS
The Mustangs placed third at the Green Valley Duals this past weekend behind first place Victor Valley (CA) and second place Uintah (UT), beating the 3x defending State Champions Green Valley by a score of 36-35 after the criteria. The Mustangs faced some stiff competition for the two days which will make us better as a team and get us ready to compete at the State Championships. On Friday, the Mustangs defeated Valley 72-6, only losing 1 match by a forfeit, and they beat North Canyon out of Arizona 72-0. All matches wrestled were won by pins. That gave us the third seed on the following day as all teams were placed in a bracket. The Varsity won their first match of the day against Green Valley's B team 68-6, and followed that up with a victory over Foothill 48-21. In the Semi final match between Victor Valley (CA), the mustangs lost 37-25. There were a couple close matches that could have gone either way and the dual was closer than the score showed. In the semi-final consolation match the Mustangs defeated Cimarron -Memorial 36-30. This brought a rematch from the Charger Duals with the Gators. When it was all said and done, there was a tie score 35-35. Due to criteria by having more major decisions, the Mustangs get the extra point and victory for the first time over the Gators. The intensity level was great, the fans were great, and the wrestling was great. Brendt Burleson got the Mustangs going with a huge pin over Nicholas Klanian, one of GV's big guns. We will get a shot at them again at their tournament this coming up week. In the Mustangs final match against Silverado, the Mustangs crushed the competition 62-18. MUSTANGS PLACE FOURTH AT STATE
With their highest finish in school history, the Mustangs placed fourth at the 2013-2014 State Tournament held at Primm, Nevada. The Mustangs also had five wrestlers medal at the tournament, its most ever as well. These wrestlers represented Shadow Ridge with pride and honor, and our Seniors will especially be missed. The coaches, parents, and Shadow Ridge student body appreciate their hard work and dedication to the program. As one of the coaches for this program, I can tell you there are not to many harder things to witness, and appreciate, when your son walks off that mat, for the final time of their career, having fallen short of the goal that they set for themselves. Not many realize or understand what these kids go through both mentally and physically throughout the season. That final hug that we give your son is what makes us continue doing what we do. We know that they are your kids, but we consider them one of our own as well. It's a hug of gratitude for the effort that they put into this wonderful sport. When they come off the mat and you take a look in their eyes, and the tears are flowing, not only from your kids, but from us as well, there is an appreciation for what they accomplished in their short wrestling careers. In our eyes, they are all State Champs. Great Job Mustangs and Remember "Tradition Never Graduates!"

MUSTANGS PLACE SECOND AT REGIONALS
Although most teams would be amazed or excited about placing six wrestlers in next weeks state tournament, the Mustangs were a little disappointed with their second place finish at the Sunset Regional Tournament this past weekend. The expectation was to win it and bring 10-12 wrestlers along for the ride. Anything less was unacceptable to the Mustang Standard. Several wrestlers that should of qualified leaves a little hole in the heart of our coaching staff. The Mustangs did win 4 individual titles at the tournament, which was most of any school. The tournament ended with 9 Mustangs placing and 6 qualifying for the State Tournament, which will be held at Primm this Saturday. Your Placers and State Tournament Qualifiers for the Mustangs were:

Mustangs Take Home First and Second Place Trophies
Congratulations go out to Lucas Washington (1st Place) and Uziel D'Mattus (2nd Place) for their finishes at the National "Monster" Summer Slam Wrestling Tournament that was held this past weekend at the YMCA. They were the only 2 Mustangs who competed in this end of the year tournament. Their hard work and dedication will definitely pay off this upcoming season.
Mustangs Travel to Salina, Utah
If the saying holds true that "Off season wrestling, makes in-season champions" then the Mustangs are off to another big year. The Mustang Wrestling Club traveled to Salina, Utah this past week to participate in the Wolf Pack Duals. They wrestled 17 duals matches as well as an individual tournament on Thursday. There was some great competition as the Mustangs went 11-6 in duals. Some wrestlers wrestled over 20 matches. 15 wrestlers made the trip while two other wrestlers, (Uziel D'mattus and Gabe Luna) participated in the week long intensive camp in California call the J Robinson Wrestling camp. He happens to be one of the top Collegiate coaches, and considered by many to be the best, in the country. He is currently the Head Coach for Minnesota. They received instruction from some of the best in the country, including All American Jayson Ness. Out of the 15 kids who attended, 5 placed in the individual tournament. A big thank you goes out to Mr. Anderson for providing Transportation for this trip for our wrestlers. Without his help, this trip would not have been possible. I'm sure the wrestlers had a grand time at our palatial hotel, "The Econolodge" one of our nicer hotels (there were only 3 in town with 1 stop light and nothing for the kids to do). Placers were:
Lucas Washington - 1st Place
AJ Thai-Bautista - 1st Place
Alika Villiatora - 3rd Place
Tyler Carter - 2nd Place

MWC Travels to AZ for WEEKEND WARS
The Mustang Wrestling Club traveled to Camp Verde, AZ this past weekend to wrestle at the Weekend Wars. This was a great event for our wrestlers to get matches against some stiff Arizona competition. Leaving at 3am in the morning made for a quiet 5 hour ride. All wrestlers were able to get 10 matches with Uziel D'Mattus getting the most mat time. He wrestled 13 matches and three of those went into overtime. Great Job Uziel. They were some tired dogs, but the trip was well worth it. These types of days will make our program tougher and better. Kids are working hard on their way to compete for a State Title next year. The following kids made the trip to Arizona with us: John Scarpati, Aj Bautista, Alika Villiatora, Jamision Rand, Lucas Washington, Uziel D'mattus, Tyler and Jarret Gledhill, Alex Mckee, Ray Pantoja, Daniel Anderson, Nate Washington, Tyler Carter, Brendt Burleson, Jacob Rivas, Ethan Pedersen, Cameron Reese, and David Word. MUSTANGS Hammer the AGGIES 51-12
Last night, in front of a packed house, the Mustangs rolled to huge victory over their rivals, the Aggies of Arbor View with a stunning 51-12 victory, to ruin their Senior Night. The Mustangs got things rolling when Juztis Yamane pinned Dalton Eickhoff in the second period. AJ Bautista then came out, in what was expected to be a close match, stuck Sergi Ireland in the second, by throwing in the legs and getting the pin. Uziel D'Mattus, in one of the most exciting matches of the evening, defeated John Vigil, one of their Seniors 7-4. Jonah Mckee defeated Westyn Hamilton by a score of 6-4 and Ben Triana beat Matthew Alejandro 7-3. The Mustangs then started their pin streak with Austin Jones pinning Kyler Richardson in the first period (1:50), Brayden Triliegi, pinning John Coolidge in the first period (:53) and John Scarati pinning Austin Heese in the fastest pin of the evening :22). Brandon Irwin then followed up with a 9-1 major decision over Alex Espinosa. It was a great win for Shadow Ridge after losing the last 2 seasons to the Aggies. Arbor was only able to win 3 of the 14 weight classes. Great Job Mustangs and good luck in your match with Palo Verde to win that Division Title.
2014 DIVISION CHAMPIONS
On a wonderful evening, where our Seniors Chaise Mokiao, Miller Porche, Brandon Irwin, Juztis Yamane, Keon King, Jonah McKee, Ben Triana, Brayden Triliegi, and Elvin Cruz were honored before the match with Palo Verde for their dedication to the program, the Mustangs went out and dismantled the Panthers of Palo Verde 52-18. The Mustangs brought home the Division Title with the victory by going 5-0 in division duals. Once again, the evening started off with a pin by Juztis Yamane over Michael Lemmon in the second period. AJ Bautista followed that up with another pin in the second by pinning Jonathan Mollah at the 3:27 mark. That was followed up by a major Decision from Keon King and pins by Uziel D'Mattus and Jonah McKee. After 2 decisions by the Panthers, the Mustangs got back to their winning ways with 4 wins in a row by Austin Jones, Brayden Triliegi, John Scarpati, and Elvin Cruz. The evening ended with Tra Forrest getting a forfeit. The Mustangs won 10 of 14 matches for another dominating performance. Our coaching staff is sad to see this group of Seniors leave the program. Off to bigger and better things will this group go to because they have wrestled. The saying from the legendary Dan Gable is true, "Once you've wrestled, everything else in life is easy." The list can go on about these young adults. From their hard work, to their fun loving spirits, it will be hard to replace this group who has become like a family. Know that the coaches love you and wish for your continued success, and expect nothing but the best from you in the future. Good Luck in 2 weeks as the Mustangs will travel to Centennial for the Sunset Regional Tournament.

AMERICA'S CUP DUALS
This past weekend Shadow Ridge represented Nevada by sending 9 wrestlers to the America's Cup Duals in California. While there they also celebrated AJ Thai-Bautista's 17th birthday. He has told us that he is able to drive without the use of sitting on a phone book. This is a great off season tournament where all star teams from around California, Idaho and Nevada participated in a dual format tournament. The kids were able to wrestle some tough matches against several state placers and Champions. While having to forfeit several weight classes, Shadow was able to win 3 out of the 6 dual meets head to head with just counting scores of kids who wrestled. Nine Mustangs were able to compete in the tournament with 1 more wrestler from Nevada also filling out our team. This tournament fell into our lap when Vegas did not have their annual wrestle off to make a team. What better way than to allow Shadow to get to compete in some excellent competition. We will wrestle anywhere, against anyone, at anytime. We will take advantage of every opportunity that we can to wrestle. Great job Mustangs!
U.S. OPEN NATIONALS
I wanted to thank everyone who helped out for making Nationals a huge success. Not only did we make money for our off-season program by working the tournament, we also received a new mat that we are able to keep at Shadow to use for tournaments and the season. We also had 9 wrestlers compete in the tournament free of charge. 17 wrestlers, who worked every day of the tournament will have their Grand Canyon Camp paid for. Those who worked the finals also were able to witness one of the best matches I have seen between US gold medalist Jordan Burroughs and 2X NCAA Champ David Taylor. Once again thank you to all of the parents who drove and who spent time working a camera at the Convention Center. I can't express how appreciative I am for what you guys do. I am a nervous wreck that whole week trying to make sure that we have everything covered, and you parents never let us down.
The following wrestlers participated in the Nationals tournament. Several of them won matches. This is one of the toughest and most prestigious tournaments they will wrestle in. They also wrestled in Freestyle and Greco:
AJ Thai-Bautista, Alika Villiatora, Daniel Anderson, Uziel D'Mattus, Tyler Carter, John Scarpati, Lucas Washington, Nate Washington, and Austin Jones. Great job in representing Shadow Ridge on the National Stage. Also A congratulations goes out to Tyler Carter for being the Cadet Nationals Champion in Greco and Folkstyle. Wrestling in these types of events will only make our program better. If you have any pics, please send them over so that I can add them to the site.

JV Tears Up the Competition at Zone
In their final tournament of the season, the JV team did not disappoint as they pounded the competition on their way to bringing home a ton of hardware from the JV Zone tournament. The Mustangs dominated the lower weight classes. Bringing home medals were:
106lbs Alika Villtora 2nd Place
113lbs Francisco Martinez 3rd Place

126lbs Brendt Burleson 1st Place JV Zone Champion
126lbs Gabe Luna 5th Place

Great job JV team for a great season. I do not think any other JV team wrestled in as many Varsity tournaments as this team did. You are expected to work hard in the off season and attend camps and tournaments. It is your job to carry on the winning tradition of The Ridge.

Mustangs Take First Step Towards Division Title
The Mustangs took their first step to regain their division title by beating Sierra Vista 61-6 and Spring Valley 35-33 in division action this past Wednesday night on their home mat. The JV also notched 2 more victories on their season totals as well. In the match over Sierra Vista Keonardo King, Jonah Mckee, Austin Jones, and Tyler Gledhill paced the Mustangs with pins over their opponents. In the first match of the evening against Spring Valley, and being short handed, the Mustangs found a way to win a tough, hard battle. Going into the match, the Mustangs knew they were down by 12 points to begin with since they were forfeiting the 220lb and 285lb weight class. They had to win some key matches and not get pinned in some others. AJ Bautista started us off great with a pin of Danny Diaz. Lucas Washington picked up a pin as well as Elvin Cruz. In two of the toughest matches of the evening, Daniel Triana and Tyler Carter fought their hearts out against two of the toughest kids in the city. Although losing the matches, they did not give up falls as Spring Valley expected which sealed the victory and paved the way for that Division Title. Great Job Mustangs.
Shadow Ridge Places Fourth at the TOC
The Varsity Wrestling team showed their mettle by placing 4th at the TOC (Tournament of Champions) held at Cerritos College with 45 Varsity teams a 19 B teams involved in the tourney. The kids wrestled hard and gave it their all after returning from Florida exhausted. The rebounded back nicely though, and brought some nice hardware home. It was a great mix of matches. Some were easy for us and there were a few hammers that we had to overcome. As a coach, I hope that these kids sell out for their teammates. They put all this work into getting better, they build faith and trust in one another. We hope that they fight for something greater than themselves. When this happens, we can expect to win a lot of matches. you definitely want to come home with something to show for it. I think we bonded pretty well as a team. this is Just what we were looking for from florida. The Mustang creed is :="Never let your teammates down"---PERIOD. I think we are getting closer as a team and willing to fight for one another in this fun sport of Wrestling. The following wrestlers placed in the tourney:
Johnny Scarpati placed 1st
Elvin Cruz placed 2nd
Brayden Triliegi placed 3rd
Juztis Yamane place 4th

MUSTANGS PLACE THIRD AT THE DISNEY DUALS
The wrestlers had a blast at the funnest place on earth during the winter break. Not only did they wrestle some stiff competition, but they were able to spend 3 days at the parks. The trip started off with a loss from one of the best teams in Jersey. Howell High School defeated the Mustangs 55-7. Only 2 matches were won. Brayden Triliegi and Elvin Cruz were the lone winners in this match. Things got back on track with a 39-30 win over Beckman from California. The momentum kept going with a win over Duncan from Oklahoma 43-28. One of the teams that Coach Johnson use to beat up on when he was coaching in Oklahoma. We then finished the day off with a win over Jupiter from Florida by a score of 21-21.
Day 2 started off with another tough team from New Jersey. Raritan High School defeated the stangs by a score of 34-18 in a tough and bloody battle. Once again the Mustangs got on track with victories over Simeon Career Academy out of Illinois 44-24, and Palm Bay High School out of Florida, 55-15. It was a great experience, one that the kids will never forget. There was some great competition and exhausting fun.
SHADOW RIDGE PLACES 14 OUT OF 66 TEAMS ENTERED IN THE HOLIDAY CLASSIC
The Mustangs placed 14th out of 66 teams entered in the Holiday Classic. We did not wrestle as we should of and need to improve on this mark to be competitive in the state. Kids wrestled some tough matches and hopefully they got something out of the competition. We our on our way to Florida to compete against some great teams and competition. It will only get us ready for the Regional Tournament which is the goal of this team. To get back the regional title as well as a state title. Much work has to be done.
Parents, once again, thanks for making the tournament a success with your hard work. Check out the article that was on Nevada Preps about our team as well as John Scarpati.

SHADOW RIDGE RECLAIMS LINCOLN'S BOOTS FROM CENTENNIAL
The Mustangs took back the boots from the Bulldogs this past Thursday night by beating them 46-24. The boots, which were donated by Lincoln Mcllravy, is a perpetual trophy that the Mustangs and Bulldogs wrestle for each year. Lincoln was a three time NCAA Champion and an Olympic Bronze Medalist. After losing the boots for the year, the Mustangs were fired up to bring them back home. In 10 years, the Mustangs have been home to the boots for 7 of the years. It's a great tradition for the rivalry, and the only trophy that is wrestled for in town. The Mustangs plan on keeping this trophy at home for years to come. John Scarpati and Brent Burleson each had first-period pins to lead the Mustangs. A.J Bautista, Ethan Peterson and Tra Forrest also won by fall. In the same evening, the Mustangs also defeated Liberty by a score of 42 to 27, and Mojave by a score of to 15.
