Francisco Martinez is the Mustangs Newest State Champion
The Mustangs crowned their newest State Champion this weekend at the State Tournament held out at Primm, Nevada. Francisco Martinez beat Greg Ewert of Damonte Ranch 5-2 in the finals to be crowned Shadow Ridge's third State Champion in school history. He joins John Scarpati and Dustin Van Riel on the wall of Champions in the Shadow Ridge Wrestling room. Francisco dominated the competition by beating Terrin Keller of Carson City in his first match 17-2 (Tech fall), and beating Ulises Munguia of Valley High School(Sunrise Region Champ) in the Semi-finals by Major Decision 13-2. The Mustangs also had three other placers at the tournament. Alika Villiatora and Kevin Henry both placed 2nd and Jacob Rivas placed 4th. Alika Villiatora got into the finals by earning two Major Decision victories over his opponents. He started off the day by beating Elyas Lizares (Foothill HS) 12-1, and beating Blake Dennett (Basic HS) 12-3 in the Semis. Kevin Henry started the tournament off with a pin over Alejandro Ordonez (Rancho HS) at the 4:54 mark in the 3rd period, and then beating Drake McAdow (Damonte Ranch HS, Northern Region Champ) in the semi's 4-2. Jacob Rivas beat Tyler Roper (Arbor View HS) 5-3 in the Consolation Semi finals before losing in the 3rd Place match. As a team, the Mustangs placed 4th with a total of 85 points.
John Scarpati 182lb. State Champ
The Mustangs will have another State Champion pic on the wall as Senior John Scarpati beat Nathaniel Garcia (Cimarron-Memorial) by a 12-5 decision to bring home Shadow Ridges 2nd Individual Championship title. John Beat Erik Stockwell (Reed) by a 10-5 decision, and pinned Angel Camacho (Foothill) in the Semi-finals. As a team, the Mustangs placed 4th at the tournament, placing 4 other wrestlers. Senior AJ Thai-Bautista placed 3rd by beating Nico Antuna (Centennial) in his final match by a score of 5-3. Senior Uziel D'Mattus also placed 3rd in the tournament by beating Max McReynolds (Bishop Monogue) by a score of 7-1. Sophmore Alika Villiatora placed 4th and Junior Brendt Burleson also placed 4th in the tournament. The boys wrestled represented Shadow Ridge with pride, class, and toughness all year, and our coaches couldn't be more proud of their hard work this year. We love them for their efforts and how they represented the Mustang Program throughout the year. Great Job Mustangs.
SHADOW RIDGE CROWNS ITS FIRST STATE CHAMPION!!!!!!!!
Congratulations to Dustin VanRiel for becoming Shadow Ridge's first State Champion in School History. Dustin Defeated Spencer Watson from Green Valley by a decision of 3-1. He scored a take down seconds before the end of the third period to secure the victory and a State Title. Dustin had a tough road ahead of him after winning the Sunset Regional Title and being one of 3 number 1 seeds in the (132lbs.) weight class. He started the tournament Friday night by pinning Tevin Ricci of Liberty in 3:52 of the second period, to advance to the semi-final match versus the number 3 seed from the Sunrise Division Storm Roper from Liberty High School, who upset the number 1 seed from up north by a score of 3-0. In one of the most exciting matches of the tournament, Dustin was down by a score of 4-7 with about 15 seconds left in the match. He hit a Peterson roll to get the reversal, plus a 3 point near-fall to win the match and advance to the Championship round. The rest was easy as Dustin became the first State Champion For Shadow Ridge. Dustin currently has a scholarship offer to wrestle at Oklamhoma City University, and we here at Shadow Ridge wish him luck. He was a pleasure to coach, and worked hard. He is one wrestler who is deserving of a State Title.
